Yes this can be done, by connecting with our subconscious mind consciously we can achieve anything we want in our lives.

How do we reach the optimum state of mind?

We have seen many cases of people getting healed of incurable diseases such as cancer. There are others who feel healed and live with zeal despite have physical disabilities and illness in the body, breaking all norms. What is it that heals them? They must definitely do something to handle their thought process, attitude, mindset and the energy dynamics of their body. Can we too, not do something more to experience a better state of health?

Yes, we can! it has been observed that there are more chances of healing when the physical techniques – medicines, exercise, and diet- are combined with the techniques of mind management and energy enhancement.

Consciously controlling our brainwaves is the first step towards healthy living. When we control our brainwaves, we control the way we think, feel, reason, and react. Relaxation, creativity and self- awareness flow naturally and our physical health improves.

Most of us would like to function with this optimum state of mind but are not sure how to achieve that state. Most of us believe that this is not possible and requires years and years of rigorous meditation practices. For common man this seems next to impossible to bring his mind under his control.

But the good news is that, yes it is possible for all of us to reap benefits of mind power through daily practice of commonly known techniques, which, if practiced regularly or in combination, will allow us to become aware of how quiet and still the mind can be, and prepare us for a marvelous voyage to the center of our being where the secret to health and happiness lies? These techniques are “Physical relaxation & Meditation.

Physical Relaxation

We already know how chronic diseases leave us with self-doubt and a sense of being betrayed by our own physical body. We often start hating our very own bodies due to the long standing illness not understanding that this would only lead to further deterioration and that this leads to the lack of faith in its self-healing capacities. This makes us worse by aggravating our nervous system and hence we are unable to relax and heal ourselves.

Learning to relax the body helps it to accept the illness, and to develop trust in the body’s ability to heal. It also reduces associated fears especially in life threatening diseases.

Unfortunately for most of us relaxation involves activities like watching television or competitive sports or reading some books or news, or going out with friends and families and having a good time. well these kind of activities do give us respite from our current situation for short time .but as soon as it gets over we are back into our over whelmed , tensed and excited states. And secondly, these activities are truly not relaxing they might be just termed as ‘killing time’.

In real relaxation, with the physical softening of the body, the breathing becomes easier, and the mental chatter of thoughts settles down to a level where there is a certain degree of detachment from our problems, and where the tensions melt away. We turn off the external world and feel calmer than usual.

In Yoga Nidra (Yogic Sleep), done is Shavasana (lying supine, flat with your limbs loosely spread to the sides) one consciously takes the awareness to each part of the body, observing and then letting go off any tightness and stress. This way, one is able to relax the body with fully aware mind. As the muscles relax and the breathing slows down, the brain wave pattern shifts towards alpha and theta.

One very common mistake is falling asleep and that is not Yoga Nidra . if one can maintain awareness in a relaxed body, the mind has the optimum mix of alpha , theta and beta for self- healing.

Generally, it is easier to relax the body with our eyes closed because this reduces the distractions from the surroundings. Though it is not a crime to fall asleep in this state. But if you want to go deeper into the subconscious mind with a certain degree of awareness, falling asleep will defeat the purpose.

Meditation

Meditation is a state of mind that leads to the higher states of awareness. To achieve this state one needs to still the mind, to control the thoughts, and to balance the emotions. Meditation reflects brainwaves close to the theta- alpha states while maintaining awareness and alertness.

The value of meditation in healing and alleviating suffering has been known and practiced for thousands of years. More and more doctors now prescribe meditation as a way of lowering blood pressure, fighting chronic diseases, healing with asthma, relieving insomnia, and generally relaxing the everyday stresses of life.

A wealth of research studies confirms the benefits of meditation:

Helps Reduce Stress and Anxiety.(the triggers for all the chronic and deadly illnesses created by man )

Increase Exercise Tolerance (increases Will Power)

Sharpens Perception

Increases Awareness.

Improves Concentration.

Maintains Good Health (keeps body agile and graceful even in old age)

Provides a General Positive Outlook on Life. (Fosters positivity)

Gives a meaning and Understanding to one’s Self. (Brings you closer to your own center)

Hence Meditation is a safe and simple way to balance a person’s physical, emotional, and mental states.

Regular practice will help you achieve all of this , but still many of us do not find the time or inclination to do it , we live in a modern world where everything is gauged by how fast we can get from point A to point B. We have no patience, we want quick tangible results right in front of our eyes even before we start working for it. As far is Meditation goes, its not one size fits all, you have to sit, practice discipline, day in and day out. That’s the deal. But we fail miserably to incorporate it into our daily routine for the following reasons:

  • Lack of Time
  • Sluggishness and sleepiness
  • An itchy and distracted state of mind
  • Unavailability of learning resources
  • Other Priorities – Family, Friends Social events
  • Lack of Patience – Silencing the mind does not happen overnight.
  • Fear of the unknown
  • A restless and racing mind.

We need to identify simple methods which are accessible to the common man, and which require us to do something to attain the optimum state of mind. The answer is PRANAYAMA. ( Yogic breathing Techniques)

The breathing techniques of pranayama have lots to do offer in this context. They smoothly induce brainwaves towards alpha and beyond – the optimum state of mind.

Breathing not only affirms our life, but it also affects our health and well-being at every level. Shallow, restricted and erratic breathing contributes to physical illness, emotional and mental problems. Relaxed, full, rhythmic and free- flowing breathing enhances the functions of all bodily systems, releasing tension, replenishing energy, calming the mind, and thus restoring balance. In every respect, on every level, breath is a powerful healing force.

Management Gurus teach us how to tap ‘Mind Power’ to create success in life. we too can use the powers of mind for better health, and the technique is Physical Relaxation, Meditation and Pranayama. These three techniques put together can be used in a very tangible way to reach the deeper levels and to tap the potential of the mind for self- healing.

You need all your energy for silence of the mind, and it is only in emptiness, in complete emptiness, that a new thing can be. – Krishnamurti

Hope this article inspires you to start putting in atleast 10 mins a day to mindfulness meditation and Breathing practices.
